It’s Been A Euphoric, Painful, Incredible Year…

I haven’t written to you in nearly a year that I wonder if I still know how to string together my words for you to read.
I have had a euphoric, joyous and pain-filled year.  I have met and photographed the most phenomenal women and my idea of having a conventional family slipped from out of my hands. I have recently fallen in love with a gorgeous human, fragile heart and all and most importantly I have become a better mother.  I have become a more compassionate photographer and I seem to cry often these days, as I find myself a part of an ever expanding circle of beauty. Just yesterday a woman came to my dusty little town all the way from WA to make photographs of her and her 6 month old son.
Me, I whisper to myself.  These women choose me to bare witness to their innate magnificence! I must have done something right!  This blessing of being entrusted with beauty and vulnerability lifts me, and facilitates the rise out of my own occasional crippling depression.  I live to serve my sisters because as I serve you I learn about myself and am reminded how precious I am because I see how divine you are; because of you, I am reminded that Great Spirit lives in our every moment and in all of us who have an epic story to tell and that the dark days are an integral part to understanding the light and that all of this beautiful mess is perfect and unflawed.
My medicine over this last year has undoubtedly been the women who choose to stand before my lens, often with tears in their eyes and sweaty palms because like me, they are searching for validation that we indeed exist and that our temples, that is to say our bodies, are beautiful homes to our prayer, that is to say our spirit.
Our temples are as beautiful as our prayer, I have evidence.  I have seen epic ripe Goddesses:

I have seen body love celebration and honoring of our feeding choices in one precious combined moment:

I traveled to LA where a new sister friend named Dena Klotz introduced me to a community wanting to be seen too, like beautiful Viviane who has cerebral palsy and has learned to hide her hands and struggles to feel beautiful in a culture that labels women much too often as flawed when in fact, we are irreplaceable and beautiful:

And I met the beautiful Katie, mother of 3 in LA who had an epic c-section story to share with me:

I collaborated with other body positive sisters, like Jes Baker for her #EmbraceALLBodies campaign:

And I feel passionately in love with a few military super-shero moms:

And I saw other magnificent mamas who humbly and beautifully sought witness to their perfection like Whitney, mother of 2:

I got in trouble on Facebook for posting this photo:

I also photographed many wise women, and learned that few of them feel comfortable with me sharing images of them on the internet (completely reasonable) and yet I yearn to share images of the Wise Women in all their gorgeousness.  Carla celebrated her 60th birthday with me:

I also learned that when you google A Beautiful Body, my images dominate the search.  Images of all of us, unphotoshoped, diverse and beautiful with all of our non-flaws:

So much has happened since my book launched a year ago last mother’s day and since I have written to you and now I embark on a new journey!  A journey of creating a beautiful website, to connect other truthful sister photographers from all over the word for a global collaboration of reflecting and witnessing one another and giving each-other a platform for our voices to be shared and nourished and cared for.
When I feel beautiful, I am gifted the opportunity to help you feel beautiful.  When you are empowered, you help me remember what it is like to be empowered.  When we feel gorgeous in our sacred temples, our magnificent prayers dance and sing and we then make wholehearted art out of this beautiful and messy life.
