Meleena’s due date was on Wednesday, and we took this image last night (Thursday) in our beloved Sonoran desert.
Meleena and I have been trying to coordinate a shoot since we first met, which was several months ago when she came to my dance class with her partner. Her green eyes and freckles made me blush they are so perfect. The ease with how she speaks English and Spanish often mixed together leaves me a bit quiet because I just want to hear more.
I found out that night at my calss that her grandmother is the creatress and owner and head chef of my all time favorite restaurant in Tucson, “La Indita,” A place I have been going to since I was a girl. My inspiration to photograph her expanded!
On Wednesday I told her that if baby hadn’t come by Thursday night we should journey into the desert for a shoot.
Baby waited, and so I picked up Meleena and her beautiful partner Lupe and their wee dog Vago with my overexcited toddler joining us on the shoot right before the sun was to set. Lupe did a quiet ceremony as we took the photos, making it one of the most sacred shoots I have had the honor to be a part of.
On the drive home after our shoot, Meleena said she felt some contractions. Perhaps there will be a birth today!
